What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store, so that something can be remembered between one page and the next, or between visits - a preference, or the fact that you are signed in.
Your choice
UK law - regulation 6 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations - requires your consent before a site stores anything on your device, unless it is strictly necessary for a service you have asked for. When you first arrive you are shown a consent banner where you can accept, refuse, or open the preferences and decide category by category. Refusing is as easy as accepting, and nothing beyond the strictly necessary is stored unless you agree to it.
Our consent tool records your choice in a cookie of its own so that you are not asked on every page. That cookie is itself strictly necessary: without it your refusal could not be remembered. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time by reopening the banner from this page, or by clearing this site’s cookies in your browser.
At present the only category in use is Functional, shown as always active because those cookies are the strictly necessary ones described below. This site runs no advertising cookies, no analytics or tracking scripts, no tag manager, no embedded video or social media players and no third-party fonts: the typefaces are served from this domain, so rendering a page makes no request to anyone else.
The cookies this site can set
All of these come from WordPress, the software the site runs on, and all of them relate to signing in to manage the site. A visitor who reads the site and sends an enquiry is not given any of them.

What is not a cookie, but is worth knowing
Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs, which normally include the IP address a request came from. That is not a cookie and nothing is stored on your device, but it is personal information: the privacy notice explains what we do with it and for how long.
The consent tool that shows the banner sets one further cookie of its own, recording the choice you made so you are not asked again.
If that changes
If analytics, advertising, embedded media or a chat tool is ever added to this site, they will set cookies that are not strictly necessary. They must then appear as their own category in the banner, switched off until you turn them on, and this page must be updated at the same time.
Controlling cookies
Beyond the banner, you can see, block and delete cookies through your browser settings, and most browsers let you refuse them for a particular site. Blocking them here stops nothing for a visitor, but it will prevent a member of staff signing in to manage the site.
